A Solid Foundation

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
- Matthew 7:24–27

A solid foundation is essential, in my opinion. One can build on nearly anything these days, but will it withstand the test of time? When living in the country, there came a day where straight winds reached 120 mph. Our home had been built in 1901. The windows were shattered, and the inside doors were blown off their hinges. The rain came in sideways from the west and poured down through the upstairs floors and into the downstairs. It was a mess.

My family and I were in the basement, safe and sound. When we emerged, we were amazed by the sheer force that caused the damage. We had insurance; everything was covered. What amazed me is that the roof had no signs of damage and the house itself didn’t budge. I inspected the footings and everything was fine. There were no signs of shifting, and the exterior walls were still straight.

Life is full of storms. We go through hard times: loss of family, broken promises, shattered dreams, careers ending abruptly, etc. When these events take place, it can feel as though life is coming at you sideways and with hurricane force—even tornado-like, destroying everything one has built. But there is still insurance, and depending on your foundation, you can still survive and withstand the tests of time.
