“The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” – Matthew 8:8-9 (NIV)
I agree with the Centurion. We don’t deserve what Jesus has to offer. We’re not worthy of His presence under our roof. That’s my point of view. Nevertheless, because of our faith in Christ’s authority, our requests are granted so long as they align with God’s will. Furthermore, who am I to know God’s perfect will? Even Jesus said He only did what He saw the Father do (John 5:19).
Does our Father in Heaven show us things to do? I think so. We see him show mercy and give grace to others to overcome their sinful nature and even physical and mental illness. I have some eye-witness accounts and my own experiences that have left my physician without any other explanation.
I really loved the account of what happened with the Centurion because it’s an excellent example of what happens when we gain access to God through Jesus. Additionally, the ideas of position, power, and purpose of authority is highlighted. And, in this one peculiar instance, Jesus not only agrees, but He is amazed and grants the Centurion’s request.
